Podcasts

The first Podcast I listened too was NPR’s The Coronavirus Daily. It was a very informative podcast. I listened to this podcast in my bedroom on my laptop. The genre of this podcast I would say is a news/update genre. They update every day new information about the corona virus so people can stay up to date on what is going on. The particular episode of this podcast talks about how the Coronavirus is making people unemployed. It talks about the Wuhan market and how the virus is spread. I found it interesting how people who don’t even know they possess it can spread it when they don’t feel sick. The format of this podcast was like the nightly news where they propose a topic, inform us on what it really means, then give us a witness report or reference like someone who is talking about it. There was some transitioning between the podcast with calming music and certain sound effects.

The second podcast I listened to was called The Joe Rogan Experience. I had heard of this one and I was very excited. I listened to the second podcast in the car using the podcast app on my phone. The podcast was an interview with a stand-up comedian and actor named Joey Diaz. They told stories and talked to one another pretty casually. Joe Rogan was interviewing him and asking questions but for some reason it seemed less interview, like one you’d hear on a radio station, it was very causal. I didn’t hear any sound effects, but I did some research and other people have noticed that the sound quality from Joe Rogan was better than other podcasts.

The third podcast I listened to was called The Views hosted by David Dobrik and Jason Nash. The episode I listened to was called Sex in Quarantine. I listened to this one before bed on my laptop one night. They talked about the coronavirus and the vaccine and how they still do their day to day things like buying Starbucks to still support local business. The format was very loose and casual like a talk show. They just conversed its each other and went on and on and kept the show going by doing that. There wasn’t anything really flashy about this podcast besides the beginning introduction. There also weren’t many transitions in this podcast it seemed all conversation based.

My experiences with these podcasts were interesting. Before with the one we were assigned in class it was harder for me to understand because that was also my first real podcast that I’ve listened too. Selecting ones that interested me made all the difference in how easy they were to listen too. Podcasts to me compared to other formats of media are definitely the most relaxed I’ve listened to. The radio seems pressed or forced especially during interviews. they seem to want to rush through the interview as well. I also like how like there not really advertisements during a podcast. This eliminates pesky 5-15 second advertisements from a YouTube video or even commercial breaks from normal television.

The Bachelor Live tweet

My experience live tweeting The Bachelor was awesome!! It was so fun and engaging and the whole community who was doing it was engaging back. I made tweets some serious and some funny and I got likes and retweeted. Overall it was the most fun school assignment I have ever been assigned to do! My favorite part of this experience was the community because they were so engaging and funny! I saw so many funny tweets that you really had to watch live to understand. I would totally live tweet a show again and I really enjoyed this experience! I even decided to finish the rest of the episode!

Technology

The topic I chose to write and read about is technology. Technology is a cool and important topic because it is constantly being improved in the modern world and can be used to help us in the future as well as make our lives much easier!

The first article I read about was all about how wearable technology could predict if people are getting sick. They discovered this by measuring heart rate spikes when people begin to get sick through wearable tech. Research shows that if we had access to 24/7 Fitbit data scientists could identify rates of the flu and outbreaks on a daily basis. This would be revolutionary for health because it would cut the rates of people who get the flu and it would help to make it less of an outbreak. The flu is one of the most contagious illnesses that people have to worry about and if we could detect it early we could help others by not letting it be as contagious and we could contain it. I fiond it fascinating that scientists can use something people wear everyday to prevent a possible outbreak.

The second article I read about was about the emergence of wireless charging into future technology. Everyone hated when apple decided to remove its headphone jack and this article is taking about all phones being charged wirelessly. Smartphone companies are going to eventually get rid of the headphone jack to replace it fully with wireless charging. Wireless charging currently is slow and not reliable and wastes a lot of energy. The bugs on it are still being worked out. Although just like the headphone jack change, people will still probably buy the phone and eventually grow to like the change. It is definitely where all companies are going to go in the future with their smartphones.

The third article I read is about how Instagram may be beneficial to introverts. In the article I read a woman realized she had a gene called BRCA1. This gene when mutated can increase the chance of getting breast or ovarian cancer. This article is about how she makes friends and finds positivity about her gene rather than going to support groups. The article goes further in depth about how it’s easier to have difficult conversations through social media as well as find support groups. This article is important because nowadays people argue how awful social media can be on ones mental health. I believe instagram could be good for an introvert for finding support groups.

The fourth and final article I read was about how the company 23 and me created a drug based on the genetic data from their customers. The company 23 and me sends you an analysis of your DNA. It can tell you if you’re prone to illnesses and you’re genetics. The company recently developed a drug based on its client’s reports. The company is allowing the Spanish drug company Almirall to design a drug which would block some small proteins that can be linked to inflammatory, skin conditions, and Crohn’s disease. This is surprising to some customers because they don’t know where their data is going. Although the company is revolutionary because it is finding cures for diseases affected by genetics based on their client’s data.

Based on the research above I was very happy I chose technology as my topic. We learned about how two companies can use data to detect or cure illnesses, we learned about how a woman used social media for her advantage and not just her entertainment, and we learned about a new feature that could affect all of our phones in the next few years. Technology will always be growing and it’s important for us to be up to date on it.
